Description
Passing this course meets the training requirement for California Department of Public Health certification. It also meets training requirements for US EPA Inspector or Risk Assessor certification under section 402 of the Toxic Substances Control Act.
When combined with the proper education and experience levels, and an approved CDPH or EPA Certification application, you will be able to:
- conduct lead hazard inspections,
- prepare risk assessment reports for building owners and occupants,
- recommend ways to safely handle lead hazards present in a building or residence.
You develop an understanding of:
- the uses of lead in buildings,
- health effects of lead exposure,
- various lead regulations, including complex HUD guidelines for sampling lead paint.
You examine the pros and cons of paint chip sampling versus using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) paint analyzers.
In hands-on workshops, you practice taking:
- paint chip samples,
- soil samples,
- dust samples,
- XRF analyzer (direct reading device) readings
You conduct a mock risk assessment with the guidance of some of the most experienced lead inspectors in California.
You also review and assess options for interim controls (temporary measures used to reduce lead hazards).
